As usual, Lotusphere has started with such a bang that it is hard to do more than recite a list of "moments", which even when written down sound like describing a fireworks display by describing each concussive bang and sparkly rocket in succession, thus completely missing the cumulative effect. Nonetheless, here are just a few moments...
Watching the Workplace Designer developers describe and demo the early Workplace Designer, which just might recapture the magic of Notes rapid development and deployment for a whole new arena...
Seeing the sessions database used on Steve Walch's smart phone and Aaron backer's WAP-enabled phone...
Seeing the new CULT shirt, which manages to capture the spirit of Lotusphere this year perfectly...
The Penumbra dinner at Fulton's Crab House with Ambuj Goyal and many other luminaries in attendance...
People passing on greetings to Mike Midas...
Listening to Andrew Pollack and Tom Krier discuss telephony and realizing there is a whole way of accessing applications I hadn't realized...
Engaging in a pricing discussion with a couple of partners that helped them realize they are worth more than they thought...
Having a few people actually "get" the layers excitement from the sessions database...
Hearing upbeat reports of things "looking up" from lots of ISVs, and even a few consultants...
2192 downloads of the sessions db so far... but almost every person who mentioned it to me say they got it from a friend...
Moving from the Sunday night party to the suite and then on to Jellrolls, meeting new people and old friends at each stop...
Catching up with friends from Wolcott Systems Group and Jones Day at the same time (many of them the same people)...
Hearing the speaker at the BDD opening session talk about the move from commoditization to mass customization to experiences...
Talking with Dick Gill about contemplative collaboration, and whether technology can encourage it...
Old friends, new friends, ideas, synergy. It should be quite a week.

Well, the conversation dealt mostly with the ways in which technology tends to allow for, and even encourage, more and more rapid response, but that the rapidity was sometimes detrimental to the quality of the discourse. Then we talked about contemplative collaboration, where the technology would actively slow down the converstaion. There are various ways technology could do this, including limiting responses until after a set waiting period, or forcing a certain time reading a post before responding. Not sure about whether to implement, but it is interesting to think of ways to slow down rather than speed up interation and collaboration, and whether that would be a good thing at times (e.g., Penumbra forum)
