Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs

My daughter is home from the Mexican border (she spent the last semester living in Ciudad Juarez and taking classes in both El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, and so crossing the border practically every day), and actually staying here for a few weeks, something which has not happened since she started college.  It has shifted routines a bit, but it has also brought a fresh perspective and energy to the household.This past weekend, that has meant buying Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs and placing them in many of the frequently used light fixtures inside and outside the house.  We have always been a fairly energy conscious family, but this is something we had never gotten around to doing.

According to the EnergyStar website:
If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR, we would save enough energy to light more than 2.5 million homes for a year and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of nearly 800,000 cars.
We replaced twenty.  Time to invite Al Gore over, I guess.  There are some very slight differences, such as the bulb hesitating a fraction of a second before turning on, and taking a minute or two to get up to full brightness, but otherwise it seems to make no difference at all, and the 75 watt equivalent bulbs take only 20 watts of power.  We also replaced some 100 watt light bulbs with the 75 watt equivalents (we really don't like the place so bright, but the previous owners did), so they now take 20% of the power and look just about the same.  It feels good to do something, even if it is not a huge something.

Lotusphere vendors - do you have a shirt for Kathy?

Kathy Sierra, author of the Head Start books, has a great post on tech t-shirts, and how unflattering and unappealing they are to many women, and not a few men.  So, for you companies that provide t-shirts, read this over and think about what you are offering the women, and men, who visit your pedestal.  Are you passionate about your customers?

Do you have any "Tips for Lotusphere Newcomers"?

Over on the Notes.Net forums (or whatever they are called now), Anita Myers posted a question that has certainly been asked before, but is relevant every year:
I am going to Lotusphere in January for this first time.  I was looking for any advice, hints, tips, etc. that seasoned veterans can offer.  My main concern is how the sessions work.  I've looked at the agenda and I'm a little overwhelmed.

Thank you for any insight.
In previous years, I would have sent her over to the Gonzo Lotusphere site, but, frankly, Turtle has gotten a little tired of all of this Lotusphere, and he has carried the ball for a long time.  I thought maybe I could pick up the slack a bit and add a Tips for Lotusphere Newcomers page in the sessions database, but rather than write just what I think, I thought I'd open it up a bit.  What suggestions do you have?  Comfortable shoes is almost always #1, but what else do you suggest, particularly (given the focus of the sessions db) what advice to help somebody pick amongst the astounding and almost scary selection of sessions, labs and opportunities?

Over 2100 downloads for the Sessions db

Just an update on the downloads of the Lotusphere 2007 Sessions db, which might indicate something about interest in Lotusphere this year.  This does not count people who have pulled from the anonymous replica (only about 65 so far) or downloaded the Turtle's Blackberry version.

The fool speaks...

My fourth entry for African Proverb week.  As I described Monday, my 16 year old was assigned an essay in which he was supposed to find an African Proverb and relate it to his life.  He claimed that it was impossible that an African Proverb could describe his life, but having read many in an entertaining quest to prove him wrong, I am inspired to use some of my favorites for posts this week.  Here is one we could all remember more often...

More prominent spot on Lotusphere.com

Back on Dec. 8, I mentioned that the official Lotusphere site had a direct link to the LS 2007 Sessions DB, but shortly afterwards, Bruce Elgort wrote and asked where the link had gone.  I wasn't sure what the story was, but it turned out Sandra Marcus just thought that was not prominent enough.  Now, there is a prominent link.  Wow!
