Genii Weblog

Civility in critiquing the ideas of others is no vice. Rudeness in defending your own ideas is no virtue.

My thirteen year old son was playing Monopoly, and commented at one point that there was just not enough money on the board.  He suggested that each player should get $500 extra, which my wife didn't think would be fair.  He argued that it would just be a bailout, or perhaps a stimulus package.  We live in weird times.

In the 2009 Lotusphere Sessions db, people can ask questions, make requests or make comments before, during or after a presentation.  But as a speaker, how will you know?  People can also ask questions of an individual, but what if you don't notice.  They may feel snubbed, rejected, and generally unlikely to ever read your blog again or hire you for that big project.

All because you passed up the opportunity to send me your address (privately, so nobody can harvest these) for auto-notification?  But wait, maybe you are worried that I will harvest your address and send you relentless annoying e-mails advertising my products?  Nope, not a chance.  I won't use these e-mails for anything except Lotusphere sessions db reasons (meaning, I might send one e-mail next year asking if I should include you, but otherwise you should only get auto-notifications).  See
this post for details and a chance to add your name.

What are you waiting for?  You may be missing questions right now!

OK, a couple of people have even deduced the super secret URL.  Unlike last year, where the URL was LS2008_SessionsDB or the year before when it was LS2007_SessionsDB (and so forth back eight years), this year the super secret URL is... wait for it...

LS2009_SessionsDB

But remember, don't tell anyone, because it is very preliminary and, well, super secret.  Shhh!

But please don't go all Van Gogh on me.  If you are a speaker or blogger or otherwise have, or want to have, yourself listed in the Lotusphere 2009 Sessions DB, this is a request for you.

One of the new features being added to the Lotusphere Sessions DB to complement the Q&A feature added last year is the auto-notification of a speaker or other named person when a question or comment is made on one of your sessions, or on your person or pedestal document, which will also be allowed.  This is an opt-in procedure, but I'd like to start with a core group who will accept auto-notification.  Your e-mail address will not be included in the database, so you don't have to worry about that.

If you would like to be included, please reply by mail to
or comment on this post.  If you want me to use an e-mail address other than one I would instantly know (you know who you are), please send me the e-mail address I should use via e-mail (see above).

Please note that questions may start at any time, as the Q&A feature will be included in the Sessions db even before times are scheduled.  Therefore, I'd like to get people signed up as soon as possible.

I decided not to submit any abstracts to Lotusphere this year (for fear one would be accepted and I'd have to actually prepare rather than treating the trip as a junket), but I love going to Germany every year to present at Rudi's fabulous EntwicklerCamp 2009 so I gave him some really choice choices.  It is going to be a great conference this year, with a good mix of German and Swiss and American speakers, so I certainly encourage anybody and everybody who has a chance to attend.  The conference is in the very beginning of March, and I am taking my 13 year old son along.

Here are the sessions I will be presenting.   I hope to see you there.

Ignoring the "No Trespassing!" Sign
In this session, we will explore some of the regions of development that are theoretically off-limits.  From @formulas to XPages, how to use design elements in ways they weren't intended to be used, how to build API applications that ignore their stated limits, and how to otherwise squeeze into questionable areas that may give you powers you didn't think you would have.

The Long-Ignored LSX Toolkit
After several long years, will IBM finally release a new version of the LSX Toolkit?  Whether or not they do, the tool remains a value and often ignored API option.  In the session, we will build a small LSX, talk about the various (new or old) features, and discuss what makes the LSX such a powerful and enduring tool that even years of neglect have not lessened its value.

In general, Genii Software does not accept purchase orders as payment, although we will make an exception on occasion, usually for a government agency that can't operate any other way.  I had a reminder today of why this policy was put in place.  We had a government agency start using CoexLinks in June on an evaluation license.  They got approval for full payment on an expedited basis in early June.  Due to some support questions we wanted to reassure them about, it was not until July 8th that they sent a purchase order and we sent a license.  The terms were "Net 30", but with an understanding that the payment would be expedited since we don't usually accept purchase orders and were bending our rules to meet their needs.

The "expedited" payment arrived yesterday, November 17th,  four months and nine days later.  Over five months since they started using the software in production to solve their issues.

That is why we have the policy.
